How We Scare Our MLM Prospects Away
March 19, 2009
As network marketers, one of the biggest challenges we face when sponsoring online is getting prospects to actually read our presentation. Whether on a web page, or in a followup email, getting the prospect’s attention is our number one objective.
The big problem – many of our prospects have already been exposed to a LOT of MLM hype and exaggeration. You may not present your opportunity this way, but many do.
I recently looked at one of these turnkey MLM sponsoring systems that provides splash pages, autoresponders, and other tools that you can use to promote any network marketing business. The concept behind these systems is that you can make money from affiliate products that you expose your prospects to, even if your prospects don’t join your business.
I found someone promoting their business with this particular system, and filled in the form. I got an email shortly thereafter that was full of hype and promises about a “marketing course” that I would be receiving in email installments. Several links in the email encouraged me to “Click Here” for more information, which of course led to the sales page trying to get me to sign up for the MLM sponsoring system itself.
So, I suspect if I joined I would be strongly encouraged to join the system’s affiliate programs so I wouldn’t “miss out” on commissions. Certainly, some of the affiliate programs (if not all) would require product purchases or the whole thing wouldn’t work.
See why our network marketing business prospects are so jaded and often hard to reach?
A better approach is to cut the hype and share common ground with your prospects. For example, don’t say “you must have your own home business to make it these days”. Rather, say something like “most of us would love to have our own home business and the independence that comes with it, but we don’t want to sell stuff or put a lot of money at risk up front.”
That approach tells your prospect that you understand where they are coming from, and aren’t trying to ram something down their throat or sell them whatever you can. You can start an effective business presentation at that point and show them how they can have a successful business without bugging people or spending a ton of money.
See the difference?
