Afraid to Approach Your Warm Market?
May 29, 2009
Are you afraid or reluctant to approach your friends and “warm market” about your network marketing business?
Lots of people start network marketing or MLM businesses with a desire to make extra money, and many are shooting for full-time income. There are many levels of ambition and desire for any new home business venture. Regardless of your ultimate financial goals for your business, network marketing is a “people” business, and as such you must connect with as many prospects as possible whether they be friends or total strangers who are looking for opportunity.
A network marketing business lives or dies on prospects and leads. You must have a steady stream of interested prospects to build a profitable business. A lot of people are reluctant to approach people they know, for fear of being rejected or (at worst) being ridiculed or preached to (“you better get out of this scam, it’s one of them there pyramid deals like Amway, and you’re gonna get burned“).
What is the solution? Let’s admit up front – not everyone has the strong outgoing personality necessary to confront their warm market with force and overwhelming enthusiasm. You may have heard the dynamic MLM trainers and speakers exhorting you to get out there “belly to belly” and talk to everyone you know about your business. While this isn’t bad advice in and of itself, the trainers and gurus who teach this approach have likely been blessed with an unusual aura of confidence and a strong personality to match.
Not everyone has that type of personality. There are other effective ways to reach this warm market that anyone can do, even someone who is basically shy and not overly outgoing.
Here are two ways to go about it. Go ahead and make that list of 100-200 people that you know or consider your “warm market”. Get their mailing addresses or email addresses. When you have done that:
- Prepare a brief letter along with your company or upline’s best “recruiting piece” and let it fly. In the letter, simply announce your involvement with your business and why you’re excited about it, and invite them to contact you if it looks interesting.
- Compose an email similar to what you would put in a letter, and send it along with a link to a site where they can learn more about your network marketing opportunity. Be sure, as in the letter, to tell why you’re excited and invite them to check it out if it seems interesting.
Of these two methods, the postal mail will likely be the most effective. The cost will be significantly higher, but if your budget allows, I suggest going that route.
To sum it up - you don’t have to bother, bug, irritate, chase, or pursue your family and warm market to build a strong and profitable network marketing business. You simply need to let them know what you’re up to in an effective, non-confrontational way, then move on to finding other prospects who are seeking to make money from home. In this day and time, with all the talk about recession, there is an abundance of them – this is a great time to build your business!
