Your Weekend Plans - Tension Relieving or Asset Achieving?
November 12, 2008 by Eldon Beard
Just a few years ago, I was working in the “real world” with a “regular job” and a “normal life”. I really didn’t hate the job I had back then (but at the same time I’m much more pleased with the time flexibility and increased income I have now).
One thing I can clearly remember is how the five day a week 8-5 grind of the corporate world took a toll on me. What sustained my hope during the week was anticipating the arrival of the weekend. On the weekend, I could just unwind and have a chance to relax. Too often, this meant flopping down in front of the TV and staying there most of the weekend.
By Sunday afternoon, I’d get really tense because I hadn’t accomplished anything and hadn’t done anything truly refreshing over the weekend. I felt the pain of the upcoming work week, knowing it was ready to pounce on me like a cat on a mouse. Talk about bad time management!
This was a very unpleasant feeling. It wasn’t a good situation. Despite this, as many do, I did the same thing over and over again, weekend after weekend.
While drifting along like this, I discovered a simple concept offered by motivational speaker Denis Waitley in two of his audios, “The Psychology of Winning” and “The Inner Winner.”
Waitley pointed out that most people spend their time away from their main job doing things that are simply “tension relieving,” such as vegging out in front of the tube, and gorging on high-calorie snacks and drinks that leave them paralyzed on the sofa in a bloated stupor.
As an alternative, he suggested that people would feel much better if they focused most of their free time on things that were “asset achieving.” By that, he meant things that can improve our lifestyles and change our financial outlook.
Building a network marketing business would fall into that category, as would exercising, reading a self improvement book, learning a new skill, plunging into a household project, etc. His point was that genuine rejuvenation comes not from vegging out, but from energetically and enthusiastically reaching out and stretching ourselves in new directions.
Remember the ending of “The Wizard of Oz”? The wizard takes off in the hot air balloon, leaving Dorothy behind. She still makes it home, though, because it turns out that the Ruby Slippers can take her there. She had the power to get back home all the time.
Well, consider this - you have the power to decide that your future is the most important thing to you this weekend.
Your network marketing business can be your “ruby slippers.” You don’t have to watch every football game or a marathon of old TV episodes.
Instead, you have the power and ability to get up off the couch and contact customers or prospective associates. Pick up your phone and call a prospect. Send an e-mail to encourage a downline team member. Invite a few people you care about to join you in your vision of success for your business. Place a newspaper ad to look for new associates. Call your sponsor or upline leader for coaching. There is a lot you can do right now, at this very moment. You have the power. Do you have the vision?
Think about how great you’ll feel Sunday night, if you decide right now to make this a weekend when you’ll take action and get things done for your network marketing business. I really believe you’ll start out Monday morning not with a grunt, but with an energized sense of excitement, because you’ll know that you’ve made progress on the path to your dreams.
Tension-relieving or asset-achieving?
Which do you want?
The choice and the power are yours.
This article is based on the testimonial of an upline leader with my team who has achieved great success in network marketing over the last ten years.
