Should You Sign Up with The Person Who Introduced You to a Business?

I read an interesting discussion on an MLM message board recently. It went something along these lines.

You learn about a really great MLM opportunity from someone. It could be someone you meet online, or a local friend. It doesn’t really matter. This potential sponsor is very friendly and you find that you get along great with them. However, they are just getting started with their business. At this point they have no track record of success.

You investigate and learn more about the opportunity, and run into one of the most successful distributors in the company. You meet him online, and he calls and gives you an excellent presentation. You find you get along and feel good about this person as well.

What should you do? Should you sign up with the person who initially introduced you to the opportunity? Some people say “yes”, others feel you must make an intelligent business decision.

I side with the “business decision” approach. However, I don’t feel it’s right to reject someone as your sponsor just because they’re new. Take some things into consideration.

If a potential MLM sponsor is new to the business but you feel good about them otherwise, consider -

• Even the most successful distributors in a company started new at some point. Is your potential sponsor really dedicated to building a long-term and profitable business, or is it just another in a string of opportunities they’ve tried?

• If your potential new sponsor lacks experience, check out their upline. Is there someone close upline who is very successful? If so, ask to call this person and get a feel for the leadership in that line. Do you feel like you could work well with that person as well?

• Is there a proven success system in place that is clear and easy to follow?

Lots of considerations go into selecting the right sponsor. It really IS important to feel comfortable and “right” about your MLM sponsor, but take other things into consideration too. You don’t have to reject someone as your sponsor if they are new – just take a deeper look and go with your gut.
